David Williams wins 25k Bellagio WPT World Championship

David Williams has just won the 25k WPT World Championship title and $1.5 million. He outlasted a field of 143 of some of the best tournament players in the world. David is also credited with knocking out Faraz Jaka by cracking his aces with Broadway. Faraz has been dominating the World Poker Tour with his sick aggressive re-raises.

The final tables was set after Phil Hellmuth bubbled in 7th place:

Seat 1. John O’Shea – 1,200,000 (12 bb)
Seat 2. Billy Baxter – 2,440,000 (24 bb)
Seat 3. Eric Baldwin – 4,490,000 (44 bb)
Seat 4. David Williams – 4,700,000 (47 bb)
Seat 5. David Benyamine – 4,705,000 (47 bb)
Seat 6. Shawn Buchanan – 1,965,000 (19 bb)

Stacked final table for WPT Championship –Hellmuth just misses out

The final 10 players in the $25,000 World Poker Tour Championship came into day 6 of the poker tournament knowing four of them would fall just shy of the televised final table, not to mention the $1.5 million first-place prize-money.

Heading into day 6 it was crystal-clear that the final table was shaping up to be one for the ages, with poker’s biggest names in contention: Phil Hellmuth, Scotty Nguyen, David Williams, David Beyamine, Shawn Buchanan, Billy Baxter, Eric Baldwin, Cliff Josephy, Nikolay Edvakov, and John O’Shea. Even with the two biggest falling short of making the final table, Phil Hellmuth in 7th place and Scotty Nguyen in 8th place, the WPT Championship’s final table is one of the strongest of all-time:

A Year in the Life of the World Series of Poker Champion

It’s less than a month away from the start of the 2010 World Series of Poker and the scene of Joe Cada’s biggest poker "crime."

For those who've slept, or perhaps spent that past six months on a desert island, the Team PokerStars Pro stole the biggest title in poker from 6,000+ poker rivals this past November, winning $8.5 million on the way to becoming the youngest Main Event winner in WSOP history.

Now, after a whirlwind year that saw him deal with the burden of fame perhaps more than he played poker, a 22-year-old Cada is looking forward to playing a few more tournaments in the lead up to defending his title at the 2010 Main Event.

"I think I just want to play my best poker really, and stay focused," he said. "It's a long time out in Nevada."

EPT Grand Final Day 1b : €1.7 million

The second first day of the 2010 PokerStars European Poker Tour Grand Final went off in Monte Carlo Monday with 497 runners joining the fray.

With 351 players hitting the Le Sporting felt Sunday, this year's Grand Final has drawn a grand total of 848 entrants.

Losing almost 100 players from last season's total of 935 might be a warning sign in other years, but travel difficulties in Europe due to volcanic ash from Iceland was likely the cause of the dip in entries this time around.

The total prize pool for the 2010 Grand Final is €8,480,000 with first place paying €1,700,000.

When play wrapped on Day 1b around 11:30 p.m. local time Monday, approximately 252 players remained with Thiago Nishijima, Salvatore Bonavena, 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Joe Cada, 2009 WPT Championship winner Yevgeniy Timoshenko and 2009 WSOP Main Event last woman standing Leo Margets among the leaders.

Kevin MacPhee Wins 2010 PokerStars.net - €1,000,000

After an epic three and a half hour heads-up battle, online qualifier Kevin "ImaLuckSac" MacPhee has earned his cool €1,000,000. On Day 3 he proved his "lucksac" status when he was all in for his tournament life with pocket nines against Vikash Dhorasoo's pocket queens, and rivered a nine to stay alive. After that, there was no stopping him. MacPhee came into the final table as big chip leader and although the lead went back and forth between him and second placer Ilari Tahkokallio several times, at last MacPhee managed to wrest it back from Tahkokallio once and for all.

The last time these two titans clashed over a final table - in the £1,000 PLH/PLO back at EPT London last year - it was Tahkokallio who was victorious and MacPhee had to settle for second. This time MacPhee got to even the score, and became a Euro millionaire in the process.

Though fierce rivals at the table, there is certainly no bad blood between the two, and neither had anything but praise and respect for the other's game. In fact, this whole final table has been a masterclass in good sportsmanship, and we hope that the inaugural PokerStars.net EPT Berlin will be remembered for the high standard of play and the gentlemanly behaviour of its finalists rather than the unfortunate incident that disrupted play yesterday.

2010 Derby Poker Championship & Previews

One of the events leading up to this weekend’s running of the Kentucky Derby is the Derby Poker Championship. Fronted by Phil Hellmuth, Robert Williamson III, and legendary University of Louisville coach Denny Crum, the event promises to be one for the ages. Poker News Daily caught up with Crum to talk about the gala, which will play out on Thursday night, April 29th, from the Palace Theatre in Louisville.

Poker News Daily: Thanks for joining us. Give us a preview of this week’s Derby Poker Championship.

Denny Crum: The charity that they’re going to be working with this year is called Blessings in a Backpack. I was involved with a charity called Kentucky Harvest way before they started working with Blessings in a Backpack, which is a charity where kids who are on the lunch program can go home on Friday afternoon and have backpacks full of food for their families to have over the weekend.

European Poker Tour Grand Final Day 1a

When players streamed into the tournament area at Le Sporting Club in Monte Carlo, it was to a sun-drenched vision of high-end luxury; this poker room is so fly that the roof comes off - literally. Being poker players, however, many of the 351 runners cowered in the shade, and 15 minutes later the roof and indeed the curtains had been closed and it was down to business. By the time play finished nine levels later, only 173 players remained with Simon Munz of Germany in pole position on 175,200.

As one could have probably predicted for an EPT Grand Final, the field was stellar. Phil Ivey turned up and found himself sharing a table with Roland de Wolfe and Men Nguyen. Elsewhere Phil Laak, Jennifer Tilly, Greg Raymer, Chad Brown and Alex Kravchenko made appearances, as did Patrik Antonius, Arnaud Mattern and Luke "_FullFlush1_" Schwartz. As always, their fates would be mixed.

Phil Laak was among the early exits when he fell foul of Andrew Chen. Gavin Griffin soon followed when he got his already depleted stack in with {A-} {K-} against Allen Bari's pocket queens. Failing to spike, Griffin kissed his chance of a second Grand Final win goodbye -- for this year at least. Following him out the door as the day turned into night were fellow luminaries Barry Greenstein, Kravchenko, Barny Boatman, Nacho Barbero, Erik Seidel, Ivey, Antonius and Mattern.

Lentol Legislation goes all in for poker parlors

"Poker is the game that most people want to play now. New Yorkers watch it on TV, they play poker on their computers and many would like to go out for a night and play it in a nice setting," said Lentol, D-Brooklyn. "If you turn on any sports channel, what do they show when real sports aren't on? Texas Hold 'em."

As New York City Off-Track Betting Corp. sinks further into bankruptcy, contemplating mass layoffs and closing betting parlors, Lentol said it is time to update the state's gaming laws to better reflect current preferences, and OTB might just be saved in the process by placing OTB Internet-access terminals in poker parlors.

Lentol said not cashing in on this trend represents a missed opportunity. Poker enthusiasts are playing in online tournaments or going to Atlantic City, and instead of the dollars going elsewhere, New York could be getting a cut of the take.

"Most folks recognize this is a popular form of gaming, and we may have already missed the boat. We can not let it go further out to sea," said Lentol.

Canadian poker tournament draws big field

The first Poker Pro Canada Classic poker tournament at Four Aces Card Club in Montreal was a huge success, drawing about 250 players from all over Canada and the U.S. - even Europe - to compete for a prize pool of $369,000.

It was the largest poker event ever held in Quebec with a buy-in of more than $1,500.

The tournament was sponsored by online poker sites UB.com and Bodog Poker and was held to celebrate the launch of Poker Pro Canada magazine (PokerProCanada.com), Canada's only publication for real poker players.

When the smoke cleared, local player Oliver "O.B." Baksic took home $96,400 for first place. He defeated another local player, Maxime Villemure, on the final hand when he flopped a flush and slow-played it. Villemure hit a straight on the turn, all the chips went in, and Baksic's flush held up. The final day of the four-day, deep-stack event lasted until 5 a.m. Villemure cashed for $75,000.

Two men steal $2,000 from private poker game

Two masked men robbed a private poker game at gunpoint Saturday afternoon and got away with more than $2,000 in cash.

The robbers walked into the building on the 900 block of South Cliff Avenue just after 3:30 p.m. Saturday, police spokesman Sam Clemens said. One of the men carried a semi-automatic assault rifle.

They told the eight players to empty their pockets and stand against the wall. The man without the gun collected the wallets, cell phones and keys, then they both left out the front door and drove south on Cliff in a Chrysler minivan.

The robbers were described as black men with medium builds: One was 5 feet 9 inches; the other was 6 feet tall.

Anyone with information on the crime is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers of the Sioux Empire at 367-7007.

Online Poker Player Takes On Hot Dog Prop Bet

High stakes poker players are notorious for the prop bets they set up with each other. Whether it’s Phil Ivey trying to go vegetarian for a year or Jeff Madsen moving to Israel for a month with no contact with his friends, poker pros will go to great lengths to win money over the silliest things.

But you don’t have to be a high-roller to take on a crazy bet - just ask 22-year-old Canadian and McMaster University student Jim Harrison, who’s currently in the middle of a quest to eat 450 hot dogs in the month of April. Like most bets, this one came up randomly - while cashing out some of his online poker winnings, he and a friend stopped to grab a hot dog. His friend joked that Harrison ought to spend all the money on hot dogs, and after lots of negotiating they’d come up with a prop bet.

Online Poker Traffic Falls Another 2.1 Percent

Online poker has taken yet another dip where "real cash" players are concerned.  PokerSiteScout.com reports that the decline was broad, with PokerStars the only gainer among the top 10 as the other nine tracked sites and networks showed a loss for the week.

The biggest mover of the week should be no surprise.  Merge Poker managed to jump a spot ahead of Everleaf to number 17 after it began providing for Sportsbook.com players.  The new arrangement allowed Merge Poker to double in size.

PacificPoker and Svenska Spel traded places once again in 12th and 13th places, with Svenska Spel pulling ahead this week.

While this week showed a decline from the previous period, online poker traffic is increasing at an annual rate of 13%, according to PokerSiteScout.com.

Best and Worst Online Poker Affiliate Programs

A great thread at the popular Two Plus Two posting forum examines the best and worst of the online poker affiliate programs that are currently marketing themselves.

One of the standouts appeared to be BetFred.com.

Purple Lounge was getting mixed reviews but their staff seemed responsive at least.

William Hill was also getting mixed reviews.  Overall they received more positive responses than negative.

"I find the software that Betfred use for the affiliate site excellent too," said one poster.

Other comments of note:

"I deal with Will Hill through Affiliates United and they are dreadful!

"Avoid Sharethechili Chilipoker affiliate program. They will give you a great deal and never pay."

"GOOD AFFILIATE PROGRAMS:  Partypartners is amongst the best. (party poker), Chipleader (UltimateBet), Opoker Affiliate program Very good."

Learn How to Play Poker FreeRolls - Part 2

In a freeroll, you are wagering nothing. You’ve put no money of your own into the freeroll, so people play accordingly – loose and reckless. People will play horrible hands simply because they don’t care if they bust, and they can win a lot of chips if they get lucky. Only when the prizes are really good, or when players get closer to the cash positions, does the poker start resembling real poker.

So there are a few ways to approach freerolls at the beginning. The majority play strategy 1 or 3. The right strategy for you will depend on the time you are willing to commit to the freeroll, the importance of the prizes to you and how those around you are playing.

Strategy 1: The Spin Up

Basically, you are trying to get all of your chips into a pot early. Why? Because everyone else is. In some freerolls you might see most of the table pushing on the first hand. Even if you wait out the opening rounds and play solid tight poker, by the time you play your genuine hand you may be up against players with ten times the chips you have meaning that eventually your premium hand will be beaten by the player with a huge stack playing a wide range.. They can afford to play every pot, and you can’t.

This strategy calls for you to push on the first hands with most of your holdings. The benefit of this? You find out early if you want to devote time to the freeroll. If you can start creating a big stack early, you have a much better chance of cashing.  If you lose? So what? You haven’t lost anything.  I don’t recommend this when the freeroll offers better prizes. The poker is likely to be much better.

Supporters push for video poker in Chicago

The push to bring video poker to Chicago may be gaining momentum.

Those supporting the idea gathered Monday at City Hall to make their point, trying to convince the City Council to reverse the ordinance banning the machines in Chicago.

They contend that video gambling would lead to thousands of jobs and would help finance projects across the state.

"We've got to get something moving so we can get people back to work," said Jerry Roper, president, Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce.

"I think it's just another reason to use to bring conventions here versus our competitors," Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association President Marc Gordon said.

Opponents say they're concerned people would become addicted to video gambling, nd they are worried bringing gambling into Chicago would lead to an increase in organized crime.

Canadian Champ Glen Chorny Seeks Return to EPT Glory

Canadian Glen Chorny was on top of the poker world in the spring of 2008, having just won the Season 4 edition of the PokerStars European Poker Tour Grand Final in Monte Carlo.

Then 22, Chorny said he felt like a rock star and was confident the $3,196,354 he'd won was just the first of many big scores to come.

Now two years later, outside of a final table appearance at the $5k Caesars Palace Classic last year, he's done almost nothing but get it in good and find a way to lose.

"It's really hard to win," he said. "I had no idea how hard it was to win before I won the tournament here.

"Since then it's been pretty much a two year tournament drought for me, except for a $5k, which I could really care less about."

Always a confident player, Chorny has done his best to limit the toll all the vicious beats of two years on the major tournament circuit can take.

But it has been hard.

How to Play Rush Poker Online

The Full Tilt Poker game has exploded on to the scene recently, but what's the best way to maximise your profits from the high-paced action?  Christian 'Bainn' Briggs finds out.

FullTilt provided poker players with a fresh, new high with their release of "Rushpoker", but don't think it is a mere gimmick as it can provide an avenue to decent profit as long as you approach it correctly. Rushpoker can also be used as a practice tool because at the core of this game is the simple fact you will be making decisions all the time, from the simple "Play/Fold" to the more complex "Position/Raise" processes, and thus you will be able to try a large amount of different plays in a relatively short time.

The Most Popular PokerStars Purchases Top Three Poker Blogs

When players think of PokerStars, they think about the games, promotions, and great pros that have made it the king of online poker sites – a place to play, but not where we’d go to get news from around the industry.

Well, the brass over at PokerStars are determined to change that perception. Earlier this week, it was announced that the internet gaming giant has acquired three of the top poker blogs on the web. The lucky trio are as follows: PokerPages.com, PlayWinningPoker.com, and Poker-Babes.com.

The first, PokerPages.com, was the original online resource for the world’s greatest card game. After years of unprecedented success, the site shut down in October 2009. This new backing from PokerStars could signal a return to the top for the long-time industry leader, which once boasted such writers as Mike Paulle and T.J. Cloutier.

Australian Lawmakers Closes iPhone Gambling Applications

Australia has many gambling options for their residents, and the risk of problem gambling is ever-present. Parliament member Nick Xenophon is looking to ensure that future generations are not exposed to gambling at a young age.

Xenophon has gone on record as saying that he believes that iPhone poker applications that allow children to play for fake gambling money, should be banned. Xenophon is concerned that the apps will give children the experience of gambling early in life.

"We already have a big enough gambling problem in this country and there's no doubt this will fuel gambling addiction," said Xenophon, to the AAP news agency. "Kids can become poker machine experts years before they are legally allowed to set eyes on a real machine."

Cold secrets of the poker face

Caspar Greeff In an obscure 1970 spaghetti western titled A Man Called Sledge, Luther Sledge, played by James Garner, tells an opponent at a poker table: "Hate don't belong in a card game, but old man, I'm gonna take every grain of gold you have in front of you."

He was right on one count, wrong on another, because greed doesn't belong in a poker game either. Nor do anger, annoyance, resentment, anxiety, fear, distress, elation, euphoria and joy. Emotions, except for curiosity, have no place at a poker table. When you play poker your emotions betray you to the enemy: your emotions are traitors.

Emotions are a form of communication, to oneself and others. Communication is information, and information is gold at a poker table.

Popular British model wins £1 million at poker tournament

Olivia "Liv" Boeree, 25, whose love of heavy metal music has earned her the nickname the Iron Maiden, has become only the third woman ever to win a European Poker Tour competition.

She is 1,250,000 euros (£1,087,411) richer after beating a field of 1,240 players from more than 40 countries at the event, held in San Remo in northern Italy.

She plans to use the money to buy a house in the world capital of poker playing, Las Vegas.

Miss Boeree beat a 22-year-old Swedish professional player with a pair of fives in a tense final.

Woman from Sittingbourne plays poker for £2.2m prize

A Kent woman who learnt to play poker four years ago is going into battle in Monte Carlo to try to win £2.2m.

Liv Boeree, 25, from Milstead, near Sittingbourne, won £1.1m earlier this week in a preliminary round in the European Poker Tournament (EPT) event.

TV presenter and model Miss Boeree, an astrophysics graduate from Manchester University, is playing in the final which starts on Sunday in Italy.

She is only the third woman to win an EPT event since the tour began in 2004.

Miss Boeree learnt to play poker while working on the Channel 5 show Ultimate Poker Showdown.

Unsettle opponents

Finally David Williams Won the Title of World Poker Tour Championship 7

After seven days, the World Poker Tour World Championship has come to an end, shutting the books on the eighth season of the WPT. David Williams will hold the title of WPT World Champion for at least a year, having bested the stacked field of 195 players to take home the $1,530,537 first-place prize.

John O'Shea was the first to go from the six-handed final table by Billy Baxter. He took $199,888 home for his efforts. Those extra chips didn't help Baxter too much; he was eliminated in fifth place by David Williams when his {A-Spades}{J-Spades} couldn't hold up against Williams' {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. The board came down {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and Baxter was sent home with $246,921.

David Benyamine fell next. He moved all-in from the small blind for just over three million. Shawn Buchanan tanked for nearly four minutes before calling from the big blind with {A-Hearts}{5-Spades}. Benyamine's {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts} needed a little help from the board, but he didn't get it when the board fell {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{7-Spades}, giving Buchanan the double up and sending Benyamine to the rail with $329,228.

Eric Baldwin Stood 2nd at WPT Championship

Beaver Dam native Eric Baldwin took second place at the season-ending World Poker Tour's Championship on Saturday night at the Bellagio.

Baldwin, who was named Card Player Magazine's Player of the Year in 2009, advanced through a field of 195 players in the $25,000 buy-in event to get to heads up against David Williams.

Baldwin had a large chip deficit to overcome (15 million to 4 million) and went all-in with an ace-five of hearts. Williams called with a pair of twos in his hand.

Baldwin made a pair of aces on the flop (first three cards) to give him the lead. But a third two on the next card gave Williams -- the runner-up in the 2004 World Series of Poker main event to Greg Raymer -- the WPT Championship.

Wrong side bet is fine in craps

QUESTION: In craps betting, I've noticed that it seems like the most consistent winners are the Don't side players laying odds. Not big money, but consistent wins. I'm currently a $5 pass line, odds, place 6 and 8 Come bettor. I'm seriously thinking of going to the Don't side. -- John G.
ANSWER: By all means, if you want to go to the Don't side, do it. There is nothing wrong with being a Wrong bettor.

As a Wrong bettor, you're wagering against the shooter and with the seven. All your bets become Don't pass and Don't come wagers. Yet, right or wrong, and nearly equally, Pass line and Don't pass bettors are making some of the best wagers the casino offers.

Although I appreciate your thoughts about switching, a Don't pass bet is mathematically only a slightly better wager than a Pass line bet, as the house edge is 1.4% versus 1.41%. Because the casino advantage between the two wagers is so minuscule, I've always advocated a Pass line bet, mostly because I enjoy the peer play, where bettors battle the casino together, win or lose.
